A engenharia de tráfego estuda os pontos de conflitos na movimentação de veículos no sistema viário. Assim, quanto maior for o número de conflitos, os cruzamentos serão mais perigosos e com menores volumes de tráfego - VDM.

Temos no ensino da engenharia civil alguns programas para capacitar os estudantes a entender o problema e criar soluções adequadas ao espaço urbano disponível e custos de implantação dentro da capacidade financeira das cidades.

Um dos programas que utilizei e recomendo é o Syncro  - programa que calcula a capacidade viária, os tempos semafóricos e volumes de tráfego horário.
